Considered the most romantic place of the country, the necropolis of Chellah is a place full of mystery, ideal for walks. It is located on the site of the ancient Roman city of Sala Colonia, 2 km south-east of the city center. Long used as a cemetery for the Moroccan sovereigns, this antique is styled with luxuriant vegetation, offers a splendid view on the Bouregeg river. Inside the site, which has become a den for storks and other animals, there are some tombs, a stone basin and a minaret with polychrome decoration. Away from the city, the remains of this necropolis were long abandoned. Today, the site is now classified and protected by the Moroccan authorities who have seized all the historical and tourist interest of this place. It will take you roughly an hour to visit. In the evening, the necropolis takes on its most beautiful colors, one understands better why it arouses as many mysteries and legends. - How to get there: From the Great Mosque, take Avenue Yacoub el Mansour to the south-east. It is best to get there by car or taxi.
