M'hamid el Ghizlane

The Oasis of Mhamid el Ghizlane is a rural commune in south-eastern Morocco, belonging to the province of Zagora in the far south-east of the Souss Massa Draa region.

The Draa river crosses the palm grove over a length of 120 km, from Foum Tidri to Iriqui National Park.

The climate prevailing in M’hamid el Ghizlane is of the Saharan type, characterized by aridity.

The temperature can reach 45 ° C in summer, while during winter it varies between 10 ° C and 18 ° C.

The plant cover of the M’hamid El Ghizlane region consists of plants that can withstand heat, cold and water scarcity (date palms and Tamarix aphylla)

Agriculture is almost impossible without irrigation. In terms of topography, the region is divided into several units:

A vast lake which represents 60% of the total surface of the area.

The "Bani" mountain range northwest of M’hamid el Ghizlane.

Desert plains to the south and east of the region that make up part of Hamada du Draa.

Mhamid el Ghizlane is world famous for its Chigaga sand dunes, which offer extraordinary desert and camel treks with breath-taking landscapes.
