Want to discover Youssoufia? There are a thousand and one ways to do so. A very famous ancient city of the kingdom featuring the ramparts which surround the ancient medina built by the Portuguese, the castle by the sea, the Portuguese cathedral, the citadel Dar EsSoltan, the Agouz fortress, the mosque of Sidi Chiker and the mosque of Sidi Dahmane. These are what constitute this historic city; you could get lost in the past there. Youssoufia is a Moroccan city, located in the centre-west of Morocco, 60km from BenGuerir, 90km to the east of Safi, 100km from Marrakech and 230km south of Casablanca.
It has a population of 80,000. Lovers of nature, ecotourists or mountain aficionados should spend a stay on the shores of Lake Zima and see the Goraani and Ayir caves characterised by rock carvings and pottery debris dating back to the Neolithic era.
Not only that, you can see La Réserve Royale des Gazelles, an animal reserve in M’sabih Talaa. It is one of the oldest animal reserves in Morocco. In Douar Laassasla whose inhabitants are known for their rural brotherhood, an endangered breed of dogs is bred, the slougui, a sort of greyhound for hunting and racing.
The Sidi Chiker Mosque and Mausoleum is one of the oldest monuments in the Safi region, constructed by one of Okba’s companions Bnou Nafi al Fihri and which dates back to the first century of the Hegira.
It is also renowned for its natural phosphate deposits ranked second in importance in Morocco after those of Khouribga (Morocco is the world's leading exporter and third largest producer of Phosphate).
