Dakhla is a town in southern Morocco, formerly called Villa Cisneros after Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros.
Under the current Moroccan administration, it is the capital of the region of Dakhla - Oued Eddahab and of the province of Oued Ed-Dahab.
It is not easy to reach the remote town of Dakhla, nestled between the waves of the Atlantic and the sands of the Western Sahara. This is why many tourists don't even think about it; others, on the other hand, consider the trip to Dakhla their main attraction.
It is indeed one of the most fascinating travel experiences: you will have to travel thousands of kilometres and take hours and hours to get away from the hustle and bustle of big cities like Marrakech and Casablanca to reach this town with its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. An experience that will take you back in time and make you appreciate the slow pace and simplicity... not to mention the views, which are simply breathtaking!
Founded by the Spanish in 1844, Dakhla still has strong cultural links with Spain, particularly the Canary Islands, but Mauritania, some 400km away, is equally influential. This very special town is set in a spectacular natural landscape: it lies on a peninsula that stretches 40 km from the main coast, creating a picturesque lagoon and offering some of the most beautiful beaches in Morocco. The sun shines all year round and the temperatures are decidedly pleasant: the extreme heat of the nearby Sahara desert is mitigated here by the relentless wind.
Unknown to international tourists until a few years ago, Dakhla is now an emerging Moroccan tourist destination thanks to the growing interest in water sports, mainly surfing and kitesurfing.
Investments are flourishing, with new buildings being added to the large number of existing hotels and flats. You won't regret the long journey.
