ABOUT BERKANE

A very old city known to history, Berkane is full of amazing archaeological sites.

The Berkane region was known to the Romans and was described by several of their chroniclers.

The Romans said that this region was on the banks of the Muluxa or Mulucha (The Moulouya River).

It is located in the vicinity of Tafoughalt where a human presence has been unearthed from 40,000 to 100,000 years ago.

Situated in north-eastern Morocco, in the eastern Rif region north of the Beni-Snassen mountains, with its population of 205,000, it is located in the magnificent Rif mountains.

It is a region which extends from the Algerian border (Oued Kiss) to the Moulouya river to the west (the border with the tribe of Ayt Stoute) and overlooks a vast region of plains, Triffa to the north and Angad to South. In the past, its forests were very dense.

The abundance of water in these mountains favoured the settlement of populations in villages. Berkane's economy is mainly based on agriculture and the city is designated as the citrus capital of eastern Morocco.

Berkane's clementines and oranges are known and appreciated around the world.

The quality and success of Berkane clementines have prompted the authorities to give these citrus fruits a protected designation of origin.

In addition, the province of Berkane is the breadbasket of the L’Oriental province. Many Moroccan semolina mills make couscous out of wheat from the Berkane region.

This region supplies L’Oriental and the rest of Morocco with legumes and fruit.
